West Cumberland Orienteering Club run a series of informal events every Thursday evening throughout Summer (May to September) using different venues each week across some of the most interesting terrain in the Lake District. There are courses to suit all abilities from novice to expert. All courses start from 06.00pm to 07:15pm. Please note that courses close at 08:30 so all competitors must report back to registration by then (even if they haven’t completed the course). Cost £2 adults, £1 juniors.
All courses use pre-marked maps (supplied) and electronic punching (e-card hire available). Just turn up to the parking area and register (usually at the car with the crowd around it!).
Please note that parking is often limited so it’s a good idea to car-share if possible.
Remember that although it is summer (technically), that on some of the higher fells the weather can turn unpleasant in a very short time, so do come prepared for inclement weather.
Up to the minute information can be found on the club answerphone (01768 895539)

Thursday 26th May High Rigg Back to Keswick this week on the technically challenging slopes of High Rigg. Thursday 9th June Mell Fell Towards Penrith this week on what is our most easterly area. Mell Fell is that symmetrical domed profile oft viewed from the A66. NY 407 247 Again, it's a narrow road so please park thoughfully. |

Thursday 23rd June Knock Murton Towards the parish of Lamplugh this week to Knock Murton, an interesting little area that bears the scars of mining activity, having been the site of extensive haematite workings. Park by the roadside looking out for traffic that sometimes moves fast through the area. NY 086 183 |
|
|
Thursday 30th June Dent Dent fell is probably most famous as it is the first taste of the lake district for those setting off on Wainwright's coast to coast walk. Thursday 14th July Blakely Raise A well known area among seasoned orienteers! Thursday 21st July Setmurthy Another popular area for WCOC in both Summer and Winter. |
Thursday 25th August Flat Fell Difficult to work out why it's called Flat Fell, especially looking up it from Raven's Crag! Although this is another well used area, look out for Pete Nelson's new map. Insider's say the map has changed significantly since the last survey. Always fast racing. Park by the roadside on Cold Fell at NY 059 137 taking care - this is a very busy road and the traffic moves fast. |
