BLEA TARN MAP NOTES
Blea Tarn was first mapped in 1979 by Pete Nelson, with further work by Don Scarrott in 1994 and 1998. Pete has done minor updates since.
The map for this event is fully resurveyed using LIDAR data, but still owes a lot to the old maps.  The longer courses use a 1:10000 map which has a bit of the old survey on as well. The courses don’t use this part, but it’s included to give a safe way off from the far end if needed.

There is a lot of tussocky ground at the east end. The worst of this (over knee high) is mapped using the ‘indistinct marsh’ symbol. There are no clear boundaries to this terrain, and the symbol is used to give an indication of runnability rather than as an aid to navigation.

Boulders shown are generally over 0.75m.  You might be lucky enough to meet one of the 5m boulders.  Crags are over 2m, and usually over 3m high.

There are many small paths (sheep trods) on the area.   The most prominent are shown as indistinct paths, but they fade in and out, and you’ll find some that aren’t mapped.

For this early season event bracken is not shown.

The green for single trees has been moved above the black colour, because significant trees on crags were disappearing.  All other symbols are ISOM 2017-2
