Courses:
Long: 4.7 km
Short: 2.2 km
Trail (Red): 3.1 km
Spark (Easy): 1.4 km
Due to the rugged nature of the forest a higher proportion than usual of the long and short courses are on tracks and paths and in farmland. The trail course can be done almost all on paths and the spark course is entirely on good tracks.
Start and Finish:
The start is 400m along the road east from registration. There will be traffic on this road and competitors will be parking along it. You should have your torch on when walking to the start, and to and from registration/download. Let drivers see you.
Important Safety Notes:
- You must come and register before starting your run and you must return to registration to download even if you retire from your course.
- If you travelled to the event alone, you must state this at registration or leave your car keys.
- Please come prepared for bad weather and carry a whistle.
Terrain:
Trashed forestry plantation and runnable farmland. There are extensive felled areas and large patches of windblow. The courses are designed so that these are easily avoidable.
Map:
I’ve done a quick update of the map in the area used by the courses. However between now and the event I am unlikely to be able to persuade the wind not to blow down more trees or mountain bikers to stop making new tracks. You will benefit from a flexible approach to map reading.

Other Notes:
New to Night Orienteering?
- You need to bring a decent head torch (and maybe a spare and/or spare battery) and make sure to dress appropriately for the weather.
- Pre-Christmas events are on easier areas or planned to be fairly easy with Long, Short, Red and Easy courses available, so are suitable for those trying night orienteering for the first time.
- Younger and/or inexperienced orienteers should be accompanied.
