Starts
From 17:31. According to His Majesty’s Nautical Almanac Office – this is the start of Darkness – at Whitehaven, which I’m taking as close enough. And, whilst the moon is at 89.3 % and waning nicely with a bit of Gibbous, it doesn’t rise until 21:59, so please don’t rely on running by moonlight. Take a torch.
The start is around 3 furlongs up the road from the car park exit – assuming that you turn right. Turning left out of the car park will increase the distance to the start. It is uphill, resulting in courses having even more downhill than uphill.
Important Safety Notes:
- You must come and register before starting your run and you must return to registration to download even if you retire from your course.
- If you travelled to the event alone, you must state this at registration or leave your car keys.
- Please come prepared for bad weather and carry a whistle.
- The walk to the Start is along the road, walking against some of the traffic coming to the event. Please take care. Please don’t dazzle drivers with torches. Pay particular care when leaving the car park. The entrance is quite narrow. Please turn right as you leave the car park.
- When driving to the event, please slow down as you see people walking or running up the road. Please be aware that the entrance to the car park is quite narrow and have a second look for pedestrians trying to leave the car park.

Other Notes:
New to Night Orienteering?
- You need to bring a decent head torch (and maybe a spare and/or spare battery) and make sure to dress appropriately for the weather.
- Post-Christmas events are on slightly tougher areas. Long, Short, Red and Easy courses should be available.
- Younger and/or inexperienced orienteers should be accompanied.
