Well done to all who braved the elements over the past month to rise to the challenge of this year's Beer Trail around the Loweswater Fells. Many thanks (once again) to Pete and Barbara Nelson for setting it up and keeping the cache stocked - it was much appreciated!

05/08/13 Scottish 6-Day 2013

A large WCOC contingent (48) joined the 3500+ orienteers from all over the world at the S6D last week. Competition was very tough with many struggling to stay in the top 25%. Star of the week was Caitlin Irving in W10A with five great results, 2, 3, 4, 4 and 5, giving an overall THIRD place. Brilliant! Alastair Thomas was the only one to get a win on one of the days, and he ended up with a FOURTH overall. Mike Billinghurst was EIGHTH overall, with Katrina Hemingway NINTH. Great orienteering in wonderful forests, with either the rain or the heat adding that little bit extra!!

23/06/13 Northern Champs Success!

Congratulations to Katrina Hemingway, W18E Champion and Helen Winskill W21E Champion. Other WCOC successes included Lewis Taylor 2nd on M21E, Jess Breeze 1st on W12B, Caitlin Irving 3rd on W10A, Rosie Spencer 3rd on W12A, and Daniel Spencer 3rd on M14A. Well done to all the other WCOC members who braved the motorways and the weather! For full results click here.

28/05/13 NW Junior Squad

Many congratulations to two new selections for the NWJS following the previous weekend’s induction session. Niamh Hunter and Ben Breeze were both selected and now join a very select and talented group of junior athletes from the NW clubs. They are the top regional squad, almost always winning the JIRCs. But they rely on a steady stream of juniors coming through. WCOC have made major contributions to the squad over the recent years. Keep it up guys!!

28/05/13 Scottish Champs

Congratulations to Alastair Thomas, Scottish M14 Champ! Dad, Roger won M50S, with Caitlin Irving second on W10A and Michael Billinghurst also second, on M50L. Charlotte Watson (W20) was second on W21E, and part of the winning ladies relay team (running for EUOC).

22/04/13 British Sprint and Middle Champs

What a superb set of results from the weekend! The Sprints at Loughborough Uni saw Carys Thomas take another Bronze medal in W10. Alastair Thomas was fifth in M14, Charlotte Watson was sixth in WOpen, and Michael Billinghurst sixth in M50. At the Middle on Stanton Moor near Matlock, Alastair Thomas won M14 (GOLD!!!!), and Bronze medals went to Caitlin Irving W10, Charlotte Watson W20, Susan Skinner W45 and Michael Billinghurst M50. 15/04/13 Lakeland Weekend Results

The LOC Middle and Classic races at the weekend at Graythwaite provided some top class competition for the club. Lewis Taylor had a couple of great runs on the Black course with a sixth place on Sunday. Alastair Thomas won Light Green on Saturday and was third on Sunday. Caitlin Irving had a win and a second place on Yellow - brilliant! Pete Nelson was second on Blue on Sunday. Lots of other good placements. For full results for both days click here.

18/03/13 Danish Spring Relay Success

Charlotte Watson, Florence Haines and Lucy Butt ran in GB colours at the Danish Spring relay this weekend. Charlotte kicked of with a great first leg to come back with a lead of 1.24, Florence maintained this despite being chased down by Ida Bobach (11 medals over 5 years at JWOC!). Lucy went out with a lead of 1.02 but one mistake half way through allowed the Dane Ita Klingenburg (gold medal at JWOC 2012 relay) to overtake and despite Lucy having the fastest splits for the last 6 controls she couldn't quite catch Ita - the Danes winning by only 3 seconds! Second place here is a fantastic result for this GB Junior team who ran together to 8th place at last years JWOC and who should still be together at JWOC 2013, but it also shows how difficult it is to get a relay win at this level with all 3 runners needing a near perfect run. We wish them luck! On the previous day they ran in a W20 mass start middle race also with good results. Lucy 3rd, Charlotte 5th and Florence 9th.

10/03/13 Yvette BakerCompetition - Well done to WCOC Juniors

At the Yvette Baker competition today at Holker Woodlands no surprise that LOC won the competition on home ground with a score of 891. WCOC juniors were brilliant though with Daniel Spencer, Niamh Hunter & Rosie Spencer all scoring 100 points. 99 points from Rebecca Maxwell & Alastair Thomas along with 97 from Henry Teasdale & Hannah Rumney, and 96 from Kate Skinner & Carys Thomas contributing to our score of 884. MDOC just pipped us with 886, but a great third place was very impressive.

10/03/13 Club Ansaphone

After 22 years of stirling service, the club answerphone has been retired and the number disconnected. However, thanks to the modern age we live in there are many ways of keeping up to date with club events. As well as the club website and weekly newsletter, why not set up your own o-events profile at http://oevents.info/. Many thanks to Rob Holder for looking after the answerphone and keeping it updated every week.

Exciting things have been happening in the Ennerdale valley. As many of you will already know (through the BBC’s Countryfile coverage) that work has been progressing over the last five years to restore the Ennerdale valley to a more natural landscape. This has involved removing many of the fences and opening up the valley, which means that there is much for visitors to enjoy. The initiative has been brought about by a partnership comprising The National Trust, The Forestry Commission and Natural England. Landowners have played their part in the plans, as have volunteers from local organisations.

WCOC’s Pete Nelson has been representing Orienteers’ interests and has carried out a huge amount of work to map the area and provide permanent orienteering courses based at Bowness Knott. The courses are available from Easter, but will be officially opened in July a press release coinciding with the club’s evening event at Bowness Knott. In the meantime, see the Wild Ennerdale homepage for more details.

07/04/12

More success for club members at today’s JK Festival Individual races. Again, podium places for Alastair Thomas (2nd M12) and another fine win for Charlotte Watson on W20E. Many top ten finishes again for WCOC runners. See the JK Results page for further details.

06/04/12

A very successful day for WCOC members competing in the JK Festival Day 1 Sprint Championships today. Most notable were Charlotte Watson (1st W20E) and Alastair Thomas winning a podium position finishing in 3rd on M12. There were many other fine performances culminating in a bagful of top ten finishes. See the JK Results page for further details.

19/02/12

Well done, WCOC. Second place in today's Compasssport Cup qualifier means a place in the final which will be held sometime in September in the Scottish Borders. See here for today's results.

05/02/12

On Thursday, BBC Countryfile were updating the programme they did some time ago about Wild Ennerdale. WCOC were invited along by the Forestry Commission to explain how the removal of various fences in the valley has helped both the roaming cattle and the competing orienteer. We had a great night event early in November and have spent quite a lot of time creating a permanent orienteering course, with Pete Nelson doing all the work for that.

Filming on Thursday afternoon in almost warm sunshine and clear skies was a real delight, which will give the viewers a wonderful picture of the valley. Two youthful members of the club showed presenter Ellie Harrison how a training exercise works amongst the large boulders in the forest. Hopefully the results of all that filming will be part of a programme later in February!

See the WCOC Facebook page for photos of the session!
